IQ motif containing protein K (IQCK)

Target
IQCK
Molecular classification
Other (contains IQ motifs; not a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor per current knowledge), Calmodulin-binding protein (IQ motif family[1][4])
01

Overview

IQ motif containing protein K (IQCK) is a member of a large family of proteins possessing the IQ motif, a sequence of about 25 amino acids that binds calmodulin in a calcium-independent manner to modulate calcium signaling[1]. IQCK is expressed in a cell-type specific manner in the mouse brain, notably in neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes but not microglia[4]. Expression appears to be regulated by cell physiology, developmental stage, and stress signals. IQ motif-containing proteins impact calmodulin-dependent signaling pathways, potentially influencing processes such as cytoskeletal organization or signal transduction[1][4]. Recent research has implicated IQCK as a novel genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease, supporting its potential use as a disease biomarker and possible future therapeutic target[4]. However, its precise physiological and pathological roles, as well as interactions with drugs, remain to be fully elucidated.
