Target intelligence / Profile preview
Ferroportin is a transmembrane protein and the only known cellular iron exporter in humans. It is encoded by the SLC40A1 gene. Ferroportin plays a central role in systemic iron homeostasis by transporting iron from inside cells to the outside, enabling its release into the bloodstream. Its activity is tightly regulated by hepcidin, which binds to ferroportin and triggers its internalization and degradation.
Hepcidin binds to ferroportin, causing its internalization and degradation, thus inhibiting iron export.
