Iron supplementation (elemental replacement) refers to the administration of iron, primarily as a mineral supplement, to correct or prevent iron deficiency and replenish body iron stores. This is most commonly used in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia (IDA), but may also be indicated for non-anemic individuals with depleted iron reserves. It provides elemental iron to support hemoglobin synthesis, oxygen transport, hormone production, and overall cellular metabolism. Oral and intravenous formulations are available, with oral forms being the first-line treatment. Dosage is typically 50-200 mg/day of elemental iron, administered for 3-12 weeks. Adverse effects can include gastrointestinal upset with oral forms and hypersensitivity reactions with intravenous forms. Monitoring of iron levels and potential toxicity is crucial.
