Overview

Iron tetraphenylporphyrin (FeTPP) is a synthetic metalloporphyrin that serves as a fundamental biomimetic model for heme-containing proteins such as hemoglobin and myoglobin (Collman et al., 1974, J. Am. Chem. Soc.). The complex consists of an iron atom coordinated within a tetraphenylporphyrin ring, which can reversibly bind molecular oxygen at the iron center to form an Fe-O2 adduct (PubChem CID 16212985). This system is extensively used in bioinorganic chemistry to study the electronic structure and bonding of oxygen-carrying proteins without the complexity of the surrounding protein matrix (Reed & Bol, 2004, Chem. Rev.). By modifying the substituents on the porphyrin ring, researchers can simulate the picket-fence environment that prevents the irreversible oxidation of the iron center (Wikipedia, Tetraphenylporphyrin). While it provides critical insights into the mechanisms of oxygen transport and activation, FeTPP is a synthetic chemical and not a biological molecule found in the human body. Therefore, it is not classified as a therapeutic target for drug development, but rather as a research tool for understanding heme-related biochemistry and developing synthetic catalysts.
