Overview
Iroquois homeobox protein 6 (IRX6) is a member of the Iroquois homeobox gene family that encodes DNA-binding transcription factors regulating gene expression during development. IRX6 is primarily active in the nucleus, where it binds DNA to modulate transcription, leading to cell development, neuron differentiation, and retina morphogenesis. Dysregulation of IRX6 (such as through methylation or decreased expression) has been detected in multiple cancers, including colon, breast, and gastric cancer, where its status may serve as a prognostic biomarker. However, IRX6 is not currently recognized as a direct therapeutic target, nor are there drugs known to act specifically on this protein.
