Overview

IRX4 antisense RNA 1 (IRX4-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed from the antisense strand of the Iroquois Homeobox 4 (IRX4) locus. IRX4-AS1 does not code for a protein, but regulates gene expression, likely through RNA:RNA or RNA:protein interactions. In prostate cancer, IRX4-AS1 is overexpressed compared to normal cells, and is associated with poorer patient survival. Different isoforms of IRX4-AS1 show differential subcellular localization (e.g., nuclear vs cytoplasmic), suggesting variant-specific functions. IRX4-AS1 may interact with proteins such as the androgen receptor (AR), possibly influencing AR signaling and prostate cancer biology. Reduced IRX4-AS1 expression is observed in drug-resistant prostate cancer cell lines, indicating a possible role in the regulation of drug resistance. Overall, IRX4-AS1 is an emerging lncRNA biomarker with potential roles in prostate cancer progression, prognosis, and drug resistance, but it is not currently established as a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, or other classical druggable molecule[1].
