ISL LIM homeobox 2 (ISL2) is a LIM-homeodomain transcription factor involved in regulating the differentiation and fate specification of neural subtypes, including motor neurons and retinal ganglion cells[1][2][6]. It enables sequence-specific DNA binding and acts as a critical component of transcriptional networks that determine neural cell identity and maturation[1][2][3][4]. ISL2 is expressed both in embryonic and adult tissues, playing important roles in neural development as well as the maintenance of various cell types. Pathogenic variants or altered expression have been linked to certain developmental syndromes and have implications in neurological disorders, but ISL2 itself is not currently regarded as a direct therapeutic target or established biomarker[2][6].
