Islet Amyloid Polypeptide (IAPP)

Target
IAPP
Molecular classification
Peptide hormone, Calcitonin gene-related peptide family
01

Overview

Islet Amyloid Polypeptide (IAPP), also known as Amylin, is a 37-amino acid peptide hormone co-secreted with insulin from pancreatic β-cells. It plays a role in glucose homeostasis by inhibiting glucagon secretion, slowing gastric emptying, and promoting satiety. In type II diabetes, IAPP can aggregate into amyloid fibrils, leading to islet amyloidosis and contributing to β-cell dysfunction and death. It is encoded by a gene on chromosome 12p12.1 and belongs to the calcitonin gene-related peptide family.
