Overview

“Islet neogenesis” is the process by which new pancreatic islet cells are generated from progenitor or ductal cells, especially after pancreatic injury or in development, and is a central focus of research into diabetes treatments because of its role in the restoration of β-cell mass[1][6][3][8]. The most studied protein associated with driving this process is the Islet neogenesis-associated protein (INGAP), a secreted Reg family protein that has been shown in preclinical models to induce neogenesis, enhance β-cell replication, exert anti-inflammatory effects, and improve glycemic control; INGAP and its active peptide fragment (INGAP-PP) have also been evaluated in human trials for diabetes, generally with a good safety profile but incomplete efficacy[2][4][5][7].
