The islet neogenesis pathway refers to the process by which new pancreatic islet cells, including insulin-producing β-cells, are formed from progenitor or stem cells within the pancreas. This pathway is distinct from β-cell replication and plays a critical role in embryonic development of the endocrine pancreas and may contribute to postnatal and adult replenishment of islets under certain physiological or pathological conditions.
