The Islets of Langerhans are clusters of endocrine cells within the pancreas, accounting for about 1–2% of the organ’s total mass. They play a central role in glucose metabolism and whole-body energy homeostasis by secreting hormones directly into the bloodstream. These islets contain several types of hormone-producing cells (beta, alpha, delta, and PP cells) arranged in a complex network. Dysfunction or loss of β-cell mass/function leads to diabetes mellitus.
