Overview

Isopropyl alcohol (IUPAC name: 2-propanol) is a colorless, volatile, and flammable small organic molecule with the formula C3H8O. It is the simplest secondary alcohol and is widely used as a solvent, disinfectant (rubbing alcohol), cleaning agent, and chemical intermediate. Isopropyl alcohol acts as a disinfectant by denaturing proteins and membranes of microorganisms, but does not function as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter. Industrially, it is produced by hydration of propylene. It is miscible in water, rapidly evaporates, and is a staple in laboratory, medical, household, and industrial settings[4][6][7][8][9][10].
