Isothiocyanates are a class of small, reactive organosulfur compounds (general formula R–N=C=S) formed mainly by hydrolysis of glucosinolate precursors in cruciferous vegetables. They are not proteins, receptors, or enzymes but low-molecular-weight phytochemicals with diverse biological effects, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and cancer chemopreventive activity. Individual isothiocyanates such as sulforaphane and allyl isothiocyanate are studied for their specific health effects, but "isothiocyanates" as a class are not themselves considered single therapeutic targets. Their primary molecular action involves electrophilic modification of thiols on proteins and activation of cytoprotective signaling pathways (notably Nrf2 activation). In summary, "isothiocyanates" is an incorrect entry for a therapeutic target: it refers to a chemical class, not a target molecule or receptor.
