ITGA6 antisense RNA 1 (ITGA6-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed antisense to the ITGA6 gene on chromosome 2. It has no protein-coding potential and is found in both the cytoplasm and nucleus of multiple myeloma (MM) cells[1]. ITGA6-AS1 forms an RNA duplex with the ITGA6 pre-mRNA, increasing its stability and, as a result, upregulating ITGA6 expression. Higher expression of ITGA6-AS1 is associated with reduced invasion of MM cells, likely through stabilizing ITGA6 RNA and attenuating metastatic potential. ITGA6-AS1 expression correlates positively with ITGA6 in MM samples, and overexpression of ITGA6-AS1 reduces MM cell invasion via this regulatory axis. Both ITGA6 and ITGA6-AS1 may be useful as prognostic biomarkers for multiple myeloma. No current therapeutics are known to directly target ITGA6-AS1, and it is not itself considered a therapeutic target such as a receptor or enzyme[1].
