Overview

ITGA9 antisense RNA 1 (ITGA9-AS1) is a long non-coding antisense RNA gene located near ITGA9, its sense partner. ITGA9-AS1 is most abundantly found in the cytoplasm of NSCLC cells where it acts by sponging miR-4765, thereby relieving repression of ITGA9 mRNA, and by recruiting RNA-binding protein HNRNPU, which stabilizes ITGA9 mRNA. Functionally, ITGA9-AS1 inhibits cell proliferation and promotes apoptosis in NSCLC models and is downregulated in NSCLC relative to normal tissue, indicating a tumor-suppressive role. It is being investigated as a potential biomarker or therapeutic strategy in cancer, particularly lung carcinoma.
