ITGAEP1 (“ITGAE pseudogene 1”) is a genomic sequence that closely resembles the structure of the functional gene ITGAE, but does not code for a functional protein and is categorized as a pseudogene. Pseudogenes like ITGAEP1 are DNA segments that arise from duplication or retrotransposition events but typically lack regulatory elements required for transcription or contain mutations rendering them nonfunctional. Contrary to functional integrin subunit alpha E (CD103)—which acts as a cell adhesion surface receptor, relevant to immune responses and certain cancers—ITGAEP1 itself does not encode a receptor, is not expressed, and has no known direct biological or pathological impact. Some results referencing “ITGAE” (integrin subunit alpha E, CD103) describe a bona fide cell surface receptor involved in T cell biology, immune regulation, and disease. The pseudogene “ITGAEP1” should not be conflated with this, as it lacks therapeutic or biological relevance. If structured data is required for drug discovery or clinical biology, the correct entry should be “Integrin subunit alpha E (CD103, ITGAE)”—not ITGAEP1.
