ITPR1 antisense RNA 1 (ITPR1-AS1, also known as ITPR1 divergent transcript or ITPR1-DT) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed antisense to the ITPR1 (inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor type 1) coding gene. It is annotated as a divergent transcript because of its head-to-head orientation relative to the protein-coding ITPR1 gene on the genome[1]. Unlike ITPR1, which encodes a calcium channel involved in intracellular signaling and is linked to various neurological disorders, ITPR1-DT does not code for a protein and has no confirmed role in disease or utility as a drug target based on current knowledge. Its molecular and biological functions remain to be specifically characterized, as is the case with many lncRNAs that may regulate chromatin, gene expression, or other aspects of cellular biology. Entries and disease associations in many resources pertain to the protein-coding ITPR1 gene (inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor type 1), not the non-coding ITPR1-DT/ITPR1-AS1. The latter should not be confused with the former, which is a well-studied calcium channel and therapeutic interest in neurology[2][3][4][7][8]. No evidence suggests ITPR1-DT has any therapeutic target status or clinical utility as of the most recent research.
