Overview
Izumo sperm-egg fusion protein 4 (IZUMO4) is a member of the IZUMO family of immunoglobulin superfamily proteins predominantly expressed in sperm[3]. While IZUMO1 is essential for sperm-egg fusion, IZUMO4 lacks a transmembrane domain and, unlike IZUMO1, does not have a central role in sperm-egg fusion[3]. IZUMO4 is capable of forming protein complexes, likely via a conserved Izumo domain, and such complex formation is observed for several IZUMO family members[3]. The exact physiological function of IZUMO4 remains uncertain, but it may be involved in sperm development or earlier steps in fertilization, possibly in processes distinct from direct gamete plasma membrane fusion[3]. There are no known drugs, disease associations, or biomarker roles described for IZUMO4.
