Japanese Encephalitis Virus prM Protein (prM)

Target
prM
Molecular classification
Structural glycoprotein, Viral protein
01

Overview

The prM protein (precursor membrane protein) of the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is a structural glycoprotein that plays a critical role in viral assembly, maturation, and infectivity. It acts as a chaperone for the envelope E protein, ensuring proper folding and preventing premature fusion activity. Cleavage of prM by furin is essential for the formation of mature, infectious virions. Post-translational modifications, such as N-linked glycosylation, also influence viral biogenesis and pathogenicity.
