Overview

Jasmonate ZIM-domain protein 10 (JAZ10) is a key transcriptional repressor in the jasmonate signaling pathway, primarily characterized in plants such as Arabidopsis thaliana. It serves as a negative regulator that prevents the constitutive activation of jasmonate-responsive genes, which are essential for defense against necrotrophic pathogens and herbivores as well as for various developmental processes. JAZ10 functions by physically interacting with transcription factors such as MYC2 and recruiting the co-repressor TOPLESS through the NINJA adapter protein. Upon perception of the bioactive hormone jasmonoyl-isoleucine (JA-Ile), JAZ10 is recognized by the F-box protein CORONATINE INSENSITIVE1 (COI1) and targeted for degradation by the SCF-COI1 E3 ubiquitin ligase complex via the 26S proteasome. Notably, JAZ10 produces alternative splice variants like JAZ10.4 that lack the degradation degron, providing a mechanism for signal desensitization during prolonged stress. While JAZ10 is not a target for human therapeutic intervention, it is a significant target in agricultural biotechnology for optimizing plant resistance and growth-defense trade-offs.
