JC Virus-infected cells presenting JC virus antigens are primarily central nervous system glial cells (oligodendrocytes and astrocytes) that have been infected by the JC polyomavirus. These infected cells express viral proteins (e.g., VP1, tAg) on their surface, making them targets for immune surveillance and adaptive immune responses via T-cell recognition. Effective clearance depends on robust cellular immunity; impairment allows unchecked lytic replication leading to severe demyelinating disease such as PML. They engage both innate sensors (RIG-I/cGAS) and adaptive immune mechanisms.
