Joint Synovial Fluid Viscosity (SF Viscosity)

Target
SF Viscosity

Overview

Joint synovial fluid viscosity refers to the thickness and flow properties of synovial fluid, a viscous, non-Newtonian liquid found in the cavities of synovial joints. It primarily functions to reduce friction between articular cartilage surfaces during joint movement, providing lubrication and shock absorption. Decreased viscosity often indicates inflammation or pathology, such as periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) or osteoarthritis. Measurement of viscosity is an important diagnostic tool.
