Overview

K(lysine) acetyltransferase 6A (KAT6A) is a histone acetyltransferase that plays a critical role in chromatin remodeling and gene regulation. As a member of the MOZ/YBFR2/SAS2/TIP60 family, KAT6A acetylates lysine residues on histones, particularly H3K9 and H3K23, influencing chromatin accessibility and transcription. It is essential for hematopoietic stem cell development and acts as a global activator of HOX genes, impacting body segment identity during development. Mutations in KAT6A are associated with Arboleda-Tham syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder. KAT6A is also implicated in cancer progression, particularly in AML and breast cancer, making it a potential diagnostic and therapeutic target.
