The kainate glutamate receptor (KAR) is an ionotropic glutamate receptor that mediates fast synaptic transmission and modulates neuronal excitability in the CNS. It is a tetrameric complex assembled from GluK1-GluK5 subunits, forming homo- or heteromers. KARs are widely expressed throughout the brain and play roles in modulating neurotransmitter release, regulating neuronal excitability, and synaptic development. Due to their modulatory roles in neurotransmission, KARs are considered potential targets for pharmacotherapy in neurological diseases such as epilepsy or disorders involving basal ganglia dysfunctions.
