Overview

Kainate receptors are a subclass of ionotropic glutamate receptors that function as tetrameric ligand-gated ion channels. They mediate excitatory neurotransmission in the central nervous system by allowing the flow of ions across neuronal membranes upon activation by glutamate or kainic acid. These receptors play key roles in modulating neuronal circuits, synaptic plasticity, and are implicated in several neurological and psychiatric disorders including epilepsy, depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, and autism.
