Kainate-type glutamate receptors (KARs) are a subfamily of ionotropic glutamate receptors that mediate fast excitatory synaptic transmission and modulate neuronal circuitry. They are tetrameric complexes formed from GluK1-GluK5 subunits, acting as ligand-gated ion channels that regulate neurotransmitter release and neuronal excitability.
