Overview

Kainate-type ionotropic glutamate receptors (KARs) are a subfamily of the ionotropic glutamate receptor (iGluR) family, which mediate fast excitatory neurotransmission in the mammalian central nervous system. KARs function as ligand-gated ion channels that respond to the neurotransmitter L-glutamate and play key roles in both pre- and postsynaptic modulation of neuronal circuits. KARs are tetrameric complexes assembled from five possible subunits: GluK1, GluK2, GluK3, GluK4, and GluK5. Dysfunction or altered expression/activity is implicated in several neurological disorders including epilepsy, schizophrenia, depression, stroke recovery deficits, Alzheimer’s disease progression, among others.
