Target intelligence / Profile preview
Karyocyte is a general biological term used to describe any nucleated cell, most commonly applied in hematology and clinical pathology to distinguish these cells from anucleated erythrocytes and platelets [1], [16]. In medical literature and therapeutic research, the term often serves as a collective designation for bone marrow precursor cells and circulating leukocytes, including monocytes, neutrophils, and lymphocytes [1], [8]. While not a single molecular target like a receptor or enzyme, karyocytes represent a critical cellular population targeted by growth factors such as erythropoietin (EPO) and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) to regulate cell production and differentiation [12], [18]. Recent studies have highlighted the role of 'circulating karyocytes' as active drivers of chronic inflammatory diseases like atherosclerosis, where their activation and gene expression profiles are targeted to reduce systemic inflammation [1]. Additionally, the presence or count of specific karyocytes, such as nucleated red blood cells, serves as a vital biomarker for physiological stress, marrow dysfunction, and various hematological malignancies [10].
Modulation of hematopoietic cell proliferation, differentiation, and gene expression; activation of specific cell-surface receptors (e.g., EPOR, G-CSFR, TPOR) to stimulate lineage-specific development.
