Karyopherin alpha pseudogene

Molecular classification
Pseudogene
01

Overview

The karyopherin alpha pseudogene (ENSG00000251419, LOC391798) is a genomic DNA segment that is structurally similar to functional karyopherin alpha protein-coding genes but contains mutations and/or deletions that prevent it from producing a functional protein. Pseudogenes are typically considered nonfunctional remnants of gene duplication or retrotransposition events, lacking protein-coding capacity and generally not involved in direct therapeutic targeting. However, recent research shows that some pseudogenes can be transcribed as non-coding RNAs, potentially playing roles in gene regulation by acting as decoys for microRNAs, antisense transcripts, or competitive endogenous RNAs. For most pseudogenes, including this locus, there is no well-established functional or druggable activity.

Biological functions

Possible non-coding RNA function (some pseudogenes can be transcribed and exert regulatory roles)Possible involvement in regulatory RNA networks via decoy mechanisms, competition for miRNAs, or antisense regulation, though direct evidence for karyopherin alpha pseudogene is lacking

Disease associations

Other (general pseudogene roles in cancer have been described, but specific evidence for this locus is missing)
