Karyopherin subunit alpha 6 (KPNA6), also known as importin subunit alpha-7, is a nuclear transport receptor involved in the import of proteins with nuclear localization signals (NLS) from the cytoplasm into the nucleus. It acts as an adapter, binding NLS-containing proteins and facilitating their docking at the nuclear pore complex in coordination with importin beta (KPNB1). This process is essential for the tightly regulated shuttling of macromolecules between the nucleus and cytoplasm, particularly in signal- and energy-dependent processes. KPNA6 is part of the importin alpha protein family, exhibiting specificity for different cargoes and contributing to the regulation of nuclear import in health and disease. It also has a documented role in supporting the replication of influenza viruses via interaction with host ANP32 proteins and viral ribonucleoprotein complexes, highlighting its potential as a target for novel antiviral strategies[1][2][3][5][6][7].
