Katanin-interacting protein (KATNIP), also known as KIAA0556 or JBTS26, is a microtubule-associated protein that interacts with the microtubule-severing complex katanin. Unlike katanin subunits themselves (such as KATNA1 and KATNB1), KATNIP is not an enzyme or a direct therapeutic target but acts as a regulatory or scaffolding protein important for microtubule dynamics. Mutations in KATNIP/KIAA0556 cause Joubert syndrome type 26, a neurodevelopmental ciliopathy characterized by cerebellar ataxia and abnormal brainstem and cerebellar development. KATNIP localizes at the centrosome and basal body, critical sites for microtubule organization in ciliated cells, and has been linked to proper organization of the cytoskeleton and cellular signaling essential for central nervous system development. There are no established drug interactions, known roles as a biomarker, or specific safety or therapeutic considerations as it is not a direct pharmacological target.
