01

Overview

KCNB2 antisense RNA 1 (KCNB2-AS1) is a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) identified in human tissue and associated with the regulation of gene expression at the RNA level[5]. It does not encode a protein but functions to modulate gene expression, primarily by binding and regulating microRNAs such as miR-3194-3p. In cancer biology, particularly in esophageal cancer, KCNB2-AS1 is upregulated and has been shown to promote cell proliferation, invasion, and migration by upregulating the expression of glycogen phosphorylase L (PYGL) through sequestration of miR-3194-3p. Because of these properties, it is under investigation as a potential biomarker in oncology, but it is not currently considered a direct therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter[2][5].

02

Mechanism of action

Acts as a molecular sponge or inhibitor of microRNAs (e.g., binds to miR-3194-3p); Upregulates downstream effectors (e.g., glycogen phosphorylase L [PYGL] via miR-3194-3p interaction)

03

Biological functions

Regulation of gene expression (post-transcriptional)Modulation of cancer cell proliferation, invasion, and migration (specifically in esophageal and bladder cancer)
04

Disease associations

Cancer (notably esophageal cancer and possibly bladder cancer)
05

Biomarkers

Potential biomarker for diagnosis and prognosis in esophageal cancer (based on its upregulation in tumor tissue)
