Overview

KCNIP4 intronic transcript 1 (KCNIP4-IT1, or 38A) is a human long non-coding RNA transcribed by RNA polymerase III from intron 1 of the KCNIP4 gene. It acts in *antisense* configuration relative to the KCNIP4 pre-mRNA and regulates alternative splicing of KCNIP4 transcripts. Upregulation of KCNIP4-IT1 (38A) drives the production of KCNIP4 isoform IV, which alters potassium channel inactivation and disrupts the interaction with the γ-secretase complex, leading to changes in amyloid precursor protein processing and increased production of neurotoxic β-amyloid species. Its expression is increased by inflammatory signals and is upregulated in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease, bridging a molecular link between inflammation, alternative splicing, and neurodegeneration
