KCNJ5 antisense RNA 1 (KCNJ5-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) gene transcribed from the opposite strand of the KCNJ5 gene locus on chromosome 11q24.3[4][6][9]. It produces transcripts but does not encode a protein[6][9]. Its main known role is as an antisense RNA potentially regulating the expression of the neighboring KCNJ5 potassium channel gene[5][9]. KCNJ5-AS1 and the KCNJ5 short isoform are co-expressed in specific brain regions, and correlation between their expressions suggests that KCNJ5-AS1 may be involved in either cis or trans gene regulation of KCNJ5[3][5]. Functional variants of KCNJ5-AS1 have not yet been directly linked to disease, but its location and expression patterns support a regulatory role in brain, and by extension, possible relevance in neurodevelopmental or neuropsychiatric disorders where KCNJ5 is implicated[5][9]. There is no evidence that KCNJ5-AS1 is a direct therapeutic target, and there are no drugs known to specifically target this lncRNA[9].
