Overview

KCNJ6 antisense RNA 1 (KCNJ6-AS1), also known as KCNJ6-IT1, is a long non-coding antisense RNA transcribed from the genomic region opposite to the KCNJ6 gene[1][4]. As an antisense RNA, KCNJ6-AS1 is part of a group of non-coding transcripts that can regulate the expression of their associated sense gene—often by mechanisms such as transcriptional interference, chromatin modification, or modulation of mRNA stability[2][6]. No direct evidence is currently available linking KCNJ6-AS1 to a specific physiological or disease role, nor is it established as a therapeutic target. However, by analogy to other antisense lncRNAs, it may be implicated in fine-tuning KCNJ6 gene expression or participating in epigenetic processes[2]. No drugs are known to interact specifically with KCNJ6-AS1, and it should not be confused with the protein-coding KCNJ6 gene, which is important for potassium ion channel function[1][5][7].

Mechanism of action

Target of antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs, class-wide mechanism for antisense RNAs)

03

Biological functions

Negative and positive regulation of gene expression (through transcriptional interference and epigenetic modification)Involvement in chromatin structure alterationCis- and trans-regulation of paired (sense) gene expression
04

Disease associations

Cancer (as a class feature of many antisense RNAs, though no specific direct evidence for KCNJ6-AS1 in major diseases can be found in current sources)Other (potential roles in gene regulation and imprinting diseases, but no direct validation for KCNJ6-AS1 itself)

Safety considerations

No drug-related safety data available, typical challenges would be off-target gene regulation effects for antisense lncRNAs; specific data for KCNJ6-AS1 are lacking
