Kelch-like protein 8 (KLHL8)

Target
KLHL8
Molecular classification
E3 ubiquitin ligase adaptor protein, Kelch-like family, BTB-Kelch protein family
01

Overview

Kelch-like protein 8 (KLHL8) is a protein encoded by the KLHL8 gene in humans. It functions as a substrate-specific adaptor within the BTB-CUL3-RBX1 E3 ubiquitin ligase complex, mediating the ubiquitination and subsequent degradation of certain protein substrates such as rapsyn. This post-translational modification regulates protein levels and is important for biological processes such as oocyte maturation and neuromuscular junction development. While KLHL8 belongs to a protein family with members implicated in cancer, hypertension, and neurological functions, KLHL8's specific role in human disease is not well defined, and it is not currently recognized as a direct therapeutic target[1][3][5][6].

Disease associations

Not directly implicated as a principal driver in major human diseases; however, the KLHL family in general is involved in cancer, developmental processes, and possibly neurological or muscular disease.Mouse data suggest a role in oocyte maturation and fertility; human associations are not well-established
