Overview

Keratin is a family of structural fibrous proteins that serve as key components in hair, nails, the epidermis, and various animal structures. It provides mechanical strength, forms protective barriers, and regulates cellular activities. There are two main types: alpha-keratins found in mammals and beta-keratins found in birds and reptiles. Mutations or dysfunctions in certain keratins can lead to diseases affecting skin integrity or other epithelial tissues.
