Overview

Keratin, type I cuticular Ha4 (KRT34) is a human protein encoded by the KRT34 gene and belongs to the type I (acidic) hair keratin subfamily. It heterodimerizes with type II keratins to form intermediate filaments, serving as an essential structural component of the hair shaft and nails. KRT34 expression is concentrated in the upper cortex of hair follicles and is critical for proper hair follicle development and the maintenance of hair growth cycles. Downregulation of KRT34 in animal models can suppress anagen hair follicle formation and hair growth, highlighting its role in hair biology, but there are no established links between KRT34 and specific major diseases, nor is it a recognized therapeutic target[1][2][3].
