KRT27
Molecular classification
Intermediate filament protein, Type I cytoskeletal keratin, Structural protein

Overview

Keratin, type I cytoskeletal 27 (KRT27) is a member of the type I (acidic) keratin family, a subgroup of the intermediate filament superfamily of proteins[3][5][10]. It is primarily expressed in the inner root sheath of hair follicles, where it is essential for the proper assembly of type I and type II keratin complexes and the formation of keratin intermediate filaments, conferring structural stability to hair follicle cells[1][3]. Mutations or altered expression are associated with various hair disorders and some cancers, though KRT27 is not recognized as a therapeutic target or a biomarker in current clinical practice[1][3][5].
