Overview

Keratin, type II cuticular Hb2 (KRT82), is a member of the type II hair keratin family of intermediate filament proteins that are basic structural components of hair and nail fibers[1][6][7][8]. KRT82 is predominantly expressed in the cuticle of human hair and functions by heterodimerizing with type I keratins to form the intermediate filament network necessary for the mechanical strength and structure of hair and nails[1][6][7][5]. Type II hair keratins, including KRT82, cluster in a region on chromosome 12 and are among the set of “hard” or hair keratins expressed specifically in hair cortex and cuticle cells during hair shaft formation[4]. Mutations or dysregulation of hair keratins can result in structural hair disorders, but KRT82 itself is not established as a common therapeutic drug target, disease biomarker, or safety concern in clinical or pharmacological contexts[1][6][7][8][5].
