Overview

Keratin, type II cuticular Hb5 (KRT85) is a member of the type II keratin family, which consists of basic proteins forming intermediate filaments in epithelial cells. KRT85 is mainly expressed in hair and nail-forming tissues, where it heterodimerizes with type I keratins to assemble the structural cytoskeleton necessary for mechanical strength and resilience. KRT85 is produced in the keratinizing cuticular cells of human hair and forms filaments together with acidic keratin partners (such as K35 and K31) in specific regions of the hair matrix and cortex. Mutations in this gene are associated with diseases affecting hair and nail formation such as ectodermal dysplasia 4 (hair/nail type) and ichthyosis. KRT85 is not recognized as a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, transporter, or signaling molecule but plays a crucial structural role in skin appendages.
