Target
KRT126P
Molecular classification
Keratin pseudogene, Type II keratin pseudogene

Overview

Keratin 126 pseudogene (KRT126P) is one of several human type II keratin pseudogenes designated KRT121P–KRT128P located in the type II keratin gene domain on chromosome 12q13.13. Of these, KRT121P–KRT124P are hair keratin pseudogenes, and KRT125P–KRT128P are epithelial keratin pseudogenes. Keratin pseudogenes, including KRT126P, have no intact open reading frame and are considered nonfunctional, meaning they do not encode a functional keratin protein or have recognized biological or therapeutic functions in humans. Pseudogenes may partially resemble protein-coding genes but are distinguished by mutations or truncations that prevent normal gene expression and protein production. KRT126P has been classified exclusively as a pseudogene; it does not generate a functional protein and therefore does not serve as a therapeutic target (receptor, enzyme, transporter, etc.). There are no known drugs that act on KRT126P, nor is it used as a biomarker or associated with any disease function, risk, or therapeutic safety challenge. Its presence in the genome is important for evolutionary understanding of the keratin gene family but not for drug discovery or patient selection. The listing is "incorrect" for target databases aimed at pharmacology or drug discovery because pseudogenes are not valid pharmaceutical targets, and inclusion of KRT126P as such is likely due to confusion with functional keratin gene products. KRT126P is a nonfunctional, noncoding human keratin pseudogene and should not be considered a biochemical target or therapeutic receptor.
