Keratin 18 pseudogene (KRT18P)

Keratin 18 pseudogenes, such as that represented by ENSG00000264093, are non-functional, processed or unprocessed genomic sequences derived from the active keratin 18 (KRT18) gene[1][5]. These pseudogenes do not encode functional keratin 18 protein and are dispersed throughout the human genome, especially on chromosomes 12 and 17. The keratin 18 protein itself is a major intermediate filament component of epithelial cells and serves important structural and regulatory functions; however, the pseudogenes are not transcribed into protein and are not currently linked to any direct physiological or disease processes[1][5]. Therefore, keratin 18 pseudogenes are considered non-functional elements in the genome and are not therapeutic targets. Note: - "Keratin 18" (KRT18) is an active, protein-coding gene and is clinically relevant, but its pseudogenes (including those referenced by ENSG00000264093) are not. - If structured data on functional keratin 18 is needed, it should be specifically requested for "keratin 18" or "KRT18."
