Overview

Keratin 18 pseudogene 14 is a non-functional, unprocessed pseudogene annotated in the human genome. It shows sequence homology to the keratin 18 gene (KRT18), a type I cytokeratin, but does not produce a functional protein product. Keratin 18 itself is a cytoskeletal protein critical in simple epithelial tissues, involved in cellular structure, apoptosis regulation, and serves as a biomarker in cancer and liver diseases; however, the pseudogene (KRT18P14) does not share these biological roles[3]. Its presence may be useful in evolutionary or genomic studies but it is not considered a therapeutic target or biomarker, nor is it associated with disease mechanisms or drug interactions[3].
