It originates from keratin 18, a gene encoding a type I intermediate filament protein crucial for structural integrity in epithelial cells. Unlike the functional KRT18 gene, KRT18P2 does not contain an intact protein-coding sequence and does not produce a functional protein. Accordingly, it is not considered a therapeutic target, does not have a known biological function, and is not implicated directly in any disease.
