Keratin 18 pseudogene 21 (KRT18P21)

Keratin 18 pseudogene 21 (KRT18P21) is a processed pseudogene related to the functional KRT18 gene, which encodes keratin 18—a key intermediate filament protein important in epithelial cell structure and function. KRT18P21, like many keratin pseudogenes, is the product of gene duplication and retrotransposition but does not retain an intact open reading frame and does not produce protein[1][5]. Its sequence is similar to the functional KRT18 gene, but it is generally considered nonfunctional and is dispersed in the human genome among many other keratin 18 pseudogenes.
