Overview

Keratin 18 pseudogene 22 (KRT18P22) is a human genomic pseudogene related to the coding gene Keratin 18 (KRT18). It does not produce a functional protein product and is not considered a drug target or a functional receptor, enzyme, or related protein. Keratin 18 pseudogene 22 (KRT18P22) is part of a large family of processed pseudogenes derived from the Keratin 18 (KRT18) gene, which is a type I intermediate filament protein primarily found in epithelial cells. Unlike the parent gene, these pseudogenes—dispersed throughout the human genome—do not encode a functional protein and do not participate in known signaling, enzymatic, or structural roles in cells. Abundant KRT18 pseudogenes, including KRT18P22, are the result of retrotransposition events and are generally considered nonfunctional genetic elements without current known biological or disease relevance. Key points: - KRT18P22 is a pseudogene, not an active gene or protein. - It does not produce a protein or contribute to canonical molecular or cellular functions. - It is not a therapeutic target and does not interact with drugs. - There are no established roles in disease, nor are there known biomarker or safety concerns associated with KRT18P22. - The parent gene, KRT18, is important in epithelial biology and cancer diagnostics, but the pseudogene derivative is not functionally relevant in this context. Summary: KRT18P22 is a nonfunctional pseudogene derived from Keratin 18 and is not considered a molecular target, functional protein, biomarker, or therapeutic entity.
