Keratin 18 pseudogene 23 (KRT18P23)

Keratin 18 pseudogene 23 (KRT18P23) is a processed pseudogene of the human keratin 18 gene. While the functional KRT18 gene encodes an intermediate filament protein widely expressed in simple epithelial cells and has roles in cellular structure and disease processes, the KRT18P23 pseudogene does not encode a functional protein and has no demonstrated biological or therapeutic significance[5][7][6]. The human genome contains a large number of keratin pseudogenes, including more than 70 pseudogenes for keratin 18, none of which contain an intact reading frame or known function[5][7]. KRT18P23 is therefore not considered a biological or therapeutic target. Note: This is distinct from the functional Keratin 18 (KRT18), which is a cytoskeletal protein involved in epithelial cell integrity, apoptosis, and carcinogenesis and is used as a clinical biomarker, but KRT18P23 is not the same entity[1][3].
