Overview

Keratin 18 pseudogene 34 (KRT18P34) is a human processed pseudogene related to the type I keratin 18 gene (KRT18)[4][3]. Pseudogenes such as KRT18P34 are typically nonfunctional remnants of genes that have lost the ability to encode proteins through evolutionary processes. KRT18P34 does not have an intact open reading frame and does not produce a functional protein product[3][4]. While some pseudogenes can have regulatory roles, there is currently no evidence to support such a function for KRT18P34. Unlike its functional counterpart, keratin 18, which plays roles in cytoskeletal structure, cancer, and cell signaling, KRT18P34 does not contribute to these processes. Keratin 18 (KRT18) is a well-characterized structural protein with recognized roles in epithelial biology and disease, but KRT18P34 is one of many nonfunctional pseudogenes derived from KRT18 and should not be confused with the active gene or protein[3][4][1][2][5].
