Overview
Keratin 18 pseudogene 4 (KRT18P4) is one of numerous non-coding DNA sequences in the human genome that arose from duplication or retrotransposition of the protein-coding keratin 18 (KRT18) gene. It closely resembles KRT18 in sequence but does not encode a functional protein due to disabling mutations and/or lack of necessary regulatory elements. Unlike the functional keratin 18 gene, which plays essential roles in epithelial cell structure and is a clinically significant biomarker in oncology, KRT18P4 does not have any known physiological, pathological, or pharmacological relevance. The overwhelming majority of keratin gene pseudogenes, such as KRT18P4, are considered nonfunctional; their presence mainly reflects the evolutionary history of the keratin gene family.
